The Audi R8 arrived in 2006 and immediately changed perceptions of what a German supercar could be. Developed by quattro GmbH and heavily influenced by Audi's domination at Le Mans, the first generation R8 combined everyday usability with genuine supercar performance. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the R8 was available with a traditional open-gate six speed manual gearbox, a feature that has become increasingly desirable among enthusiasts seeking a more engaging and analogue driving experience.
About this R8
This Audi R8 4.2 FSI quattro is an early example finished in the highly attractive Jetblau Metallic (LX5W), complemented by Oxygen Silver sideblades and a Light Grey Fine Nappa leather interior. Power comes from the naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 producing 420 hp, paired with the sought after six speed manual transmission and Audi's permanent quattro all wheel drive system. Today, manual R8s are increasingly difficult to source. It is estimated that around 15% of first generation production was equipped with the six speed manual gearbox, corresponding to roughly 3,500 to 3,600 cars from a total production of approximately 24,000 first generation R8s. The combination of a naturally aspirated V8, exposed aluminium shift gate and timeless design has made the manual R8 one of the most desirable modern classics on the market.
Chassis number WUAZZZ4287N000292 was delivered by Audi AG and has spent much of its life in Germany and Sweden, where it has been maintained through the Audi dealer network before moving into enthusiast ownership.
Exterior
Finished in Jetblau Metallic, this R8 presents in a specification rarely seen ever. The colour highlights Walter de Silva's now iconic design and contrasts beautifully with the Oxygen Silver sideblades. Paint measurements carried out during the 2026 Classic Car House Green Book inspection indicate readings consistent with factory paint across the vehicle's aluminium body panels. The inspection noted only minor cosmetic imperfections, including a few stone chips on the front of the vehicle and minor paint damage on the right side mirror, all consistent with careful use over time. Overall cosmetic condition was assessed as being above average for its age.
Interior
The interior is trimmed in Fine Nappa leather in Light Grey and features many of the options that buyers sought when the R8 was new. Notice the alcantara headliner as well. Factory equipment includes electrically adjustable heated seats, Bang & Olufsen sound system, Audi Navigation Plus with MMI, Bluetooth telephone preparation, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and the desirable multifunction sports steering wheel. The exposed aluminium gear gate remains one of the defining features of the early manual R8 and serves as a reminder of an era before dual clutch transmissions became the norm.
The 2026 inspection assessed the interior as well maintained, with only minor age related wear. A small area of discoloration was noted on the driver's seat, but the cabin remains highly presentable overall.
Engine and drivetrain
Behind the passenger compartment sits Audi's celebrated 4.2-litre naturally aspirated FSI V8. Producing 420 hp and revving to over 8,000 rpm, the engine delivers a characterful soundtrack and immediate throttle response that modern turbocharged alternatives struggle to replicate. Factory performance figures include a top speed of 301 km/h. One of the highlights of the Green Book inspection performed by Classic Car House in June 2026 was the electronic compression test. All eight cylinders showed strong and consistent readings between 97% and 100%, confirming good internal engine health. During the road test, the engine, gearbox, steering and braking systems all performed as intended.
Service and maintenance
The car is accompanied by a documented service history and service book containing stamps from authorised Audi centres and specialists. Documented maintenance includes:
- 13.02.2007 – Delivery inspection, Audi AG
- 02.09.2009 – LongLife Service, Audi Zentrum Hofheim, 998 km

- 10.06.2020 – Oil service, Audi Stockholm, 54,346 km
- 21.09.2023 – Oil and filter service, Audi Lund, 65,912 km
In addition, the car has undergone regular Swedish inspections throughout its life and consistently passed its roadworthiness tests. The accompanying documentation also records replacement of an oil level sensor, brake components and other maintenance items as required.
Summary
The first generation Audi R8 has already established itself as one of the defining analogue supercars of the modern era. The combination of naturally aspirated power, compact dimensions, timeless styling and, most importantly, the open gate six speed manual gearbox has made these cars increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Finished in the rare and elegant Jetblau Metallic, supported by extensive documentation, verified service history and a strong technical inspection, this example represents an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most engaging modern classics available today.
